Before I began frequenting California, I pegged everyone there as the stereotypical health nut. I figured it was a place where you could find Whole Foods and cold pressed juice cafes on every other corner. I wasn’t completely wrong, however, I was shocked to find out that every other corner did station different types of donut shops. I didn’t realize it was such a popular snack on the west coast! This past year my sister came across DK’s Donuts & Bakery in Santa Monica, where we ordered custom “happy birthday” donuts for our mom. Now every time we make our way to Cali, the trip isn’t complete without stopping for these “to die for” donuts.
This shop is famous for their croissant hybrid donuts. However, my absolute favorite recipe they make are their purple donuts, or what they call Ube donuts. I literally dream about these. I don’t know who decided mixing dessert and vegetables was a good idea, but I’m so happy they did! These Ube donuts are made with sweet purple yams. They have their standard recipe, but they also create different Ube concoctions. If you like pistachios, try the Ube Pistachio Dream. I could be the world’s greatest writer, and attempt to describe to you the taste. It just wouldn’t do them any justice. I guess you’ll have to try them for yourself!
If flaky croissant donuts or sweet, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside veggie donuts don’t hit the spot, then try one of their other creations. If you’re a breakfast lover they have awesome dessert waffles. The last time I paid them a visit I discovered their Cookie Dough Bun Dream Donut. Yeah I said it, cookie dough. They literally slice a glazed donut in half and slab some chocolate chip cookie dough in the middle. My life is now complete, and I can die a happy woman.
So…the next time you find yourself in the Santa Monica area with a sweet tooth, go nuts and make a stop at DK’s. You’ll be happy you did!
